Recently, farmers in Huanghua, Cang County, and Mengcun have been calling in, reporting that many of their summer corn leaves have been eaten by armyworms. What should they do? The reporter consulted Xi Guocheng, a technician from the Cangzhou Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences. He said that this is a rare occurrence where summer corn has been affected by the third generation of armyworms. The corn leaves have been completely eaten by armyworms of the third instar and above. Prevention and control measures must be taken urgently, otherwise it will directly lead to reduced yields or even total crop failure.
Corn armyworm, also known as the marching worm, mainly feeds on corn leaves as larvae. When it occurs severely, it can eat all the leaves in a short period of time, resulting in reduced yields or even total crop failure. The main damage symptom is the larvae biting and feeding on the leaves. When a corn field is completely devoured, the larvae often migrate in groups and columns to another field to cause damage. Fields with low terrain, uneven corn plant heights, and overgrown weeds are usually severely affected.
Some fields have a high planting density of corn, leading to local moisture and warmth in the cornfield, creating a breeding ground for armyworms. This year, there have been numerous precipitation processes, resulting in high soil and air humidity, and the meteorological conditions are also very conducive to the occurrence and damage of armyworms in summer corn fields. Furthermore, the reduction of natural enemies such as ground beetles, frogs, birds, parasitic wasps, and parasitic flies, as well as the increased resistance of armyworms due to excessive pesticide use, all contribute to the difficulty in killing armyworms, which can rapidly multiply in a short period of time.
To prevent and control the corn armyworm, the following methods can be adopted:
Lure and kill adult insects. When the number of adult insects begins to increase, set up 2 to 3 poplar branches or grain straw bales per acre, replace them every two days, and burn the bales. Alternatively, set up a sugar-vinegar lure basin every 2 to 3 acres, lure and kill adult insects daily, which can significantly reduce the occurrence of eggs and larvae in the field.
Prediction and forecasting are crucial measures for preventing and controlling armyworms. It is best to eradicate armyworms at the egg stage before the larvae reach the third instar. During the peak egg hatching period until the larvae reach the third instar, promptly spray the following pesticides: 20% diflubenzuron wettable powder at a dilution of 500 to 1000 times, or 4.5% lambda-cyhalothrin emulsion at a dilution of 1000 times + emamectin benzoate.
To better prevent and control the corn armyworm, a recommended compound pesticide is: emamectin benzoate + phoxim + cyhalothrin; abamectin + chlorpyrifos + cyhalothrin.
